So, here we are with 3 months of the year behind us now.  How are you doing with your goals?  There have been a couple of goal updates here at Western.  We are still focusing on fitness and wanting to make healthy changes in our lives.  We have a goal of exceeding our “normal” number of steps.  In other words, just move more!  Get up every hour and walk around your desk, your office or your floor.  Again, whatever you are doing, try to increase your movement.

February was Heart Disease awareness month and even though it is no longer February, we still want you to be aware of your heart health.  Sitting is killing us!!  Get up!  MOVE!!  Think about the activities you do during the day.  What is taking up the most time?  Can you do it standing?  Can you break it up by walking around?  Many of us sit at work all day long, drive home sitting and sit at our computers or in front of the tv for a good portion of the evening.  Again, just get up.  Set a timer and stand up for 30 seconds every hour at work.  Play some of your favorite tunes on your way home and belt them out, that can burn up to 100 calories depending on your drive.  While watching your shows at night, make a workout routine to the catch phrases or the character appearances, for example, every time Chandler’s jaw drops, drop and do 10 push-ups.  Or, just set a limit for yourself, I can only watch this show while I am at the gym or I can only watch 1 episode and then, I have to walk around the block, etc.  It can be different every day just find what works for you and GET OUT THERE AND MOVE!!

New Year's Resolutions

Now that we are a couple of weeks into the New Year, how are you feeling about your resolutions?  Already discouraged?  Hopefully not, but if you are, you’re not alone.  Most of us set out at the beginning with grand plans for complete overhauls on one or more areas of our lives and then, quickly become overwhelmed and give up.  This year, let’s get there!!
It’s all about the small things we can and will do everyday.  Sometimes, you have to set a small goal to see if it is a change you can live with.  If it is, it incorporates into your life, if you fight it all the time, maybe it needs to be adjusted.  We all know we should be healthier, but going from the average American diet to no sugar, no soda, and no carbs overnight, is not reasonable and leads to failing those resolutions.  How about making small goals that add things at first rather than taking out all your favorites.  For example, add more vegetables to the meals you already eat.  Love pizza?  Great!!  Have a side salad with it or make sure there are lots of veggies on it.  That can be a great way to at least start adding those into your diet.
Here at Western, we have decided to make it a healthier year, too.  We will be setting monthly goals for our staff to help us incorporate healthier habits into our daily lives.  If you are having a hard time thinking of what you might want to try, check in and do them along with us.
This month’s goal is drinking 64oz of water daily.
Let’s make 2018 the year we really make healthy changes happen!!

November 2016

It’s holiday season again! During this fun, but busy season, it’s important for you to take care of your own health. Stress, emotions, illnesses, all takes a toll on your immune system. It’s up to you to take care of your health. Washing your hands, eating healthy meals, getting enough rest are things that help keep you healthy. Drinking enough fluids especially water can prevent and shorten infections, from UTI’s to Colds. It’s important to take time for yourself.

Flu Season

It's that time of year again-Flu Season-
As part of your prenatal care, your doctor recommends getting a flu shot at any time during your pregnancy. Getting a flu shot is a safe and effective way to prevent possible flu related complications. The flu shot protects both mom and baby(up to 6 months of age) from getting the flu.  We will be offering the flu vaccine here at Western starting September 2016- November 2016, so talk to your doctor today about getting vaccinated.
