Our spotlight for the month is the newest Physician to our practice. Dr. David Matthews gives us some insight about his life, interests and also some great advice.
Plans for 2015:
My next vacation will be at the end
of March. My family and I will be going to southern California. We go down
there fairly often, but we always have a good time with the nice weather, the
sunshine, the beach, and so many different things to do.
Professionally, I will take my oral
board examination toward the end of the year.
I will be glad when this is finished.
It requires a lot of study and preparation to do well. Once I am done with that, I will be able to
relax and just enjoy seeing my patients, delivering babies, doing surgery, and
helping people.
Favorite Activities:
Most of the
things I do outside of work now center around my family. I have four active kids, and I enjoy playing
with them and going to events they are involved in. This winter, my kids and I have enjoyed
sledding at the park. Unfortunately, we
haven’t had too many snow storms, but it is really fun watching their
excitement as they speed down a snowy hill.
My seven
year old boy, Oscar, is playing Junior Jazz basketball right now. For most of the team, this is the first time
they have played basketball in an organized way. It is fun to watch the games each Saturday
and is a bit humorous. The referees are
a bit lax on the rules (for obvious reasons), so it is funny to see how some of
the kids take advantage of that.
Movie
nights are always fun with the family.
It’s nice that they make so many movies now that are entertaining for
both the kids and the adults. Some of
our favorites are Despicable Me 1&2, Cars 1&2, and any other animated
movie by Disney, Pixar, or DreamWorks.
Hobbies:
A lot of my
old hobbies I don’t have too much time for anymore. I used to play a lot of
sports-basketball, baseball, and racquetball-but haven’t done those much
lately. I also really like music-singing, playing the piano and guitar-but I am
mostly just doing that in the form of church choir and singing bedtime songs to
the kids at this point. One hobby I
still find time for is reading books at night after the kids are in bed. My favorite genre is mystery/suspense, and my
favorite all-time author is Agatha Christie.
I’ve always
held to the idea that we will be much happier in life if we approach it with a
positive attitude. Other advice to live
by: we will find more joy in life if we spend time helping others, even if it
means sacrificing time away from our own wants; and don’t worry so much about
the things that are outside of your control.
Thank you
to all of the staff at Western Ob/Gyn for their friendship and all of their
hard work in caring for our patients.
Thank you to my partners for their mentorship and their help in getting
me established in my new practice. Thank
you to my family for their love and support now and during the long years and
cross-country journey training to be a doctor.
